Keywords for the day: Unleashing the Dragon
2012 is the year of the dragon, and back in February we were told to expect a wild year, although it is apparently a ‘water dragon’, and water has a calming effect on the Dragon’s fearless temperament.
Calming effect? Well, today there was no evidence of a calming effect on the lovely ladies and gents with whom I have the pleasure of sharing long and arduous days in the day job. As I mentioned before this week, we have two birthdays and one of them a ‘big one’ with a zero at the end. We decided to visit our local Chinese restaurant at lunchtime to celebrate and last week booked a table for today lunchtime at 12.30 pm.
Our arrival at the restaurant was met with a blank look. They had forgotten we were coming. After hastily setting the table we eventually were served with our drinks, which were plonked on the two tables pushed together on trays for us to sort out while we ate our meals. One of the waiters kicked one of the birthday girls (by accident) and was rude to her. Then, at the end of the meal we were given our bill for 13 people when there were only 12. Again, a waiter was rude, but eventually gave us an amended bill.
It is not typical of this particular restaurant to give bad service, and usually we leave a generous tip. They were obviously just having a bad day. The money collected in – a tenner each – produced a £14.40 ‘tip’.
Outside the restaurant, we gleefully pondered what to do with the £14 we had made on the meal.
I can honestly, hand on heart, say that if our syndicate wins the jackpot on the lottery with the extra lines either tonight or at the weekend, we will definitely reimburse the restaurant the remaining £14.
